While the University campuses remain closed and staff are working from home, classes continue online and we also continue to accept applications for Trimester 2. If you have interested students looking to apply to study this year or in 2021, please get in touch with your Regional Manager with any questions. The application deadline for Trimester 2 has been extended to 1 June.

Here are the latest updates from the international team:

Important updates for English-language testing during COVID-19

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many English proficiency testing services have closed down their testing centres around the world. Nevertheless, an online version of the TOEFL and IELTS tests are available for students to take at home in many countries, except for mainland China and Iran.

For applicants residing in mainland China and Iran only, the University now accepts the Duolingo English Test (DET) for the remainder of the year (Trimester 2 and Trimester 3) only; or until normal face-to-face testing can resume, with the following minimum scores:

  • DET score of 100 for undergraduate entry本科入学的DET成绩为100
  • DET score of 110 for postgraduate entry研究生入学的DET成绩为110

The DET has been identified by many international universities as an alternative for those who reside in China or Iran to meet the English language requirements for entry.

Important changes to course withdrawal policy

The University has made some changes to the course withdrawal policy in response to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on students.

  • Students will be able to withdraw from courses up until the final day of teaching in Trimester 1 (26 June) without requiring the approval usually needed from their Faculty. Please note that a refund may not be applicable.

  • If you have students considering withdrawing from one or more of their courses, encourage them to visit this page to determine if they may be eligible for a refund of their fees. Before withdrawing, students should check with Wellington University International if it may affect their visa.

If your students are unsure, or have further questions, please ask that they email fee-reconsideration@vuw.ac.nz for advice before they withdraw.

Change to English proficiency programme start dates

Due to the ongoing uncertainty brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been a few small changes to the start dates to the English Proficiency Programme (EPP) for Trimester 2 and Trimester 3 of this year.

  • EPP classes for Trimester 2 will now commence on 15 July and finish on 9 October 2020.

Information about hardship options for international students during COVID-19

We understand that some students, including international students, are facing hardship due to the impacts of COVID-19.

We have developed information about some options that you can recommend to your students who are in New Zealand and need assistance in accessing food parcels and other essential items.

  • Under the Education (Pastoral Care of International Students) Code of Practice 2016, the University has an important responsibility for all students' health and wellbeing. Students in need of assistance can contact the international office (or their usual contact) in the first instance to see if they can help.
  • Community, faith-based, and cultural groups are providing support to those in need. To find out what is available, students can contact Citizens Advice Bureau or phone 0800 367 222.
  • If your students are in urgent need of food or other essentials, they can get a free food parcel from a foodbank on the New Zealand Foodbanks website.
  • Students can contact their home country’s embassy in New Zealand to see what help they can provide.
