FOUNDATION YEAR FOR SOCIAL STUDIES, HUMANITIES OR SCIENCE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WARSAW
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The course aims at preparing international candidates for studies in English in a multi- cultural environment at the University of Warsaw. Participants will develop confidence and skills needed to actively participate in academic and professional life.
TARGET STUDENTS:
International students who intend to study at the UW, meet the English language entry requirements and improve study and other practical skills for life, such as communication skills needed in international teams, problem solving skills, intercultural fluency and awareness of cultural differences between countries.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum IELTS 4.0 level or obtaining a satisfactory result – in all language skills – from an online placement test and Skype conversation.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This is a specially designed, full-time, intensive, one-year programme of 600 learning hours (45 min each), including contact hours and online classes with English language teachers, as well as seminars with field specialists. It combines face-to-face instruction with on-line support in an innovative way. It aims at developing learner autonomy, skills and knowledge.
GROUP SIZE: 12-14 participants (minimum 12 participants required to form a group)
ACADEMIC/TEACHING STAFF:
Experienced and highly professional language instructors from the Centre for Foreign Language Teaching, field specialists from different departments of University of Warsaw.
PRINCIPLES:
In addition to developing language skills necessary for studying, participants will get a chance to live and study in accordance with the IntlUni Principles for quality teaching and learning in the multilingual and multicultural learning space. Students with various
knowledge systems and diverse ethnic, academic, and linguistic backgrounds can develop their own cultural identity, benefit from awareness of cultural differences and gain intercultural knowledge. The University of Warsaw provides an inclusive learning space, thus integrating students and staff in the institution.
TUITION FEE: 3100 EUR
It also covers course materials including textbooks and online materials. On completion of the course students will receive a statement of eligibility to study in English at Bachelor or Master level at the University of Warsaw and might take a part in the certification exam on B2 level.
Qualified candidates are required to make payment of tuition fee before obtaining documents necessary in the visa application process, e.g. acceptance letter.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
The skills will be developed in an integrated and autonomous way and geared towards academic language proficiency. On completion of the programme you will be able to:

Cope with spoken instructions and campus jargon;

Read and understand authentic academic English texts;
Make use of different reading strategies;
Analyze academic texts in a critical way and do research;
Understand writer’s tone and purpose;
IN THE AREA OF WRITING:
Summarize and paraphrase written texts;
Take notes from written and oral input;
Communicate in writing using the appropriate style;
Recognize and use different academic writing formats;
IN THE AREA OF SPEAKING:
Express ideas clearly and accurately;
Use appropriate intonation and rhythm;
Argue with others in an assertive and suitable way;
Use appropriate register in verbal communication;
ACROSS MULTIPLE DOMAINS:
Interact across various communication situations;
Prepare successful presentations;
Communicate in multicultural environment;
Make use of such skills as: doing research, critical thinking skills, making notes, e- learning skills, presentation skills, referencing, understanding and avoiding plagiarism, time management, self-management, problem-solving and task management, career planning, strategic learning, intercultural communication.
